So I know that I usually don't talk about weight loss, but it's something that comes up continually, so today I am giving in.
And we are going to talk about getting real about: what if it really was about weight loss?
Usually, my perspective is about fixing your relationship with food, but what if it wasn't? What if your primary concern, the biggest priority was just to not be overweight?
Ok, you got me. Let's look at it.
First, let's look at the reasons why we gain weight. There are many, but here are a few big ones.
1) Is because we eat too much. We simply eat more calories than your body can handle as energy right then, so it stores it as fat.
2) Is because of long term patterns that actually drive up our weight over time.
Let's look at #1. Eating too much. Well, why do we eat too much? The #1 cause of binge eating is restrictive dieting. Well ok! If we want to eat less than we better stop dieting!
Let's look at #2. Long term patterns that drive up our weight. Do you know what the biggest indicator of weight gain over time? Dieting over time! Long-term dieting, repeated dieting actually leads to us becoming more and more overweight. Crazy! Same answer! Ending the dieting!
So if it's all about weight loss, the best tip I can give you is to stop doing the things that lead to more weight gain.
But I have lost weight from dieting! Ok, is that true? Are you slimmer than you were before you went on your first diet? If the answer is no, then you haven't lost weight from dieting. You have gained weight from dieting.
It's like if someone gives you a dollar, but then takes two dollars away from you.
You don't say "they gave me a dollar! Yay!" Even though, yes, that happened. But that's not ALL that happened. You see the reality of the rest of the story.
You say "they took my money!"
So what if it was all about the weight? What if our only concern was to to not gain weight?
Even thinking of it this way, the answer is still the same!
I am not telling you guys to give up on being healthy to stop binge eating. I am saying, what if we stopped binge eating and actually stopped the next 50-pound weight gain that's on its way with the direction you are headed right now? From dieting!
And never being able to lose the weight that you have gained because of the dieting?
And continuing to gain even more because you are still binge eating?
And gaining it even faster because of what's happening to your metabolism with the binging and restricting?
